Coordinate Graphing / Geometry Project 3ºESO

The purpose:  The following activities allow students to demonstrate their understanding of the coordinate system and apply that knowledge to various geometric concepts.

Goals:  This project addresses the following curriculum standards:
  • Draw, construct, and describe geometrical figures and describe the  relationships between them
  • Recognize and represent proportional relationships between quantities
  •    Verify experimentally the properties of rotations, reflections, and translation:
o   Lines are taken to lines, and line segments to line segments of the same length.
o   Angles are taken to angles of the same measure
  •    Understand that a two-dimensional figure is congruent to another if the second can be obtained from the first by a sequence of rotations, reflections, and translations; given two congruent figures, describe a sequence that exhibits the congruence between them.
  • Describe the effect of dilations, translations, rotations, and reflections on two-dimensional figures using coordinates.
  • Understand the a two-dimensional figure is similar to another it the second can be obtained from the first by a sequence of rotations, reflections, translations and dilations, given two similar two-dimensional figures, describe a sequence that exhibits the similarity between them
  • Experiment with transformation in the plane.

Procedure:  The students will read chapter 12 of their text book, and complete all 10 activities. They must graph all activities on regular sized graph paper and answer all questions connected with each activity.  Answers must be complete sentences and in appropriate mathematical terms. Each graph must be drawn using a ruler and must be colored.

Grade:  This packet will be graded in two parts according to the grade sheet included in the packet.

VOCABULARY

Congruent or Similar

When one shape can become another using only Turns, Flips and/or Slides, then the two shapes are Congruent.

Two shapes are Similar when we need to Resize for one shape to become another (we may also Turn, Flip and/or Slide).
